Sewing Patterns - PDF downloads

The patterns displayed here are from my 'Pattern Puzzles' and 'Off-The-Rails' in my commercial studio. I persist in using industry seam allowances and make a point of including this information in each pattern pdf. If you go to my blog and members area you'll find posts for each of these designs covering history, development and pattern alterations. Enjoy :)

Hip Twist Top Sizes XS-XXL A4/letter (download)

The Hip Twist Top has been a favourite Pattern Puzzle post for many years.  This sewing pattern has a more relaxed fit than the original blog post.  It is based on an oversized tee-shirt pattern that I have been using for many years.  You'll find the original blog post here:  Pattern Puzzle - Hip twist Top

The pattern and the design suits two-way stretch knits best, where the fabric has some elastane (Lycra, Spandex) content.  The design has the twist placed in the high hip area with an option to add extra length if you prefer a longer top.  If you're cutting with a one-way stretch (two-way stretch US) knit fabric it's possible that you won't necessarily get the same soft drape around the high hip area.

Also available here as a PDF download to be printed as A4/letter at home.  Please be sure when you go to print that you select 'actual size' with 'no scaling', or at 100% in your print dialogue box.  This will make sure your pattern is printed at the correct size.  A0 and Plotter size print documents will be made available very soon.

Hip Twist Top Features:

Imagine your most comfy tee-shirt you own then add a quirky twist detail.  The pattern as downloaded finishes around the mid to high hip level with a soft blouson effect in the high hip area.  There are specific length alteration lines printed on the pattern for anyone that would like to make a longer style tee-shirt.  The sleeve length is mid-bicep and could be lengthen should you desire it.  The back length for this tee is a between 60-67cm and sits just above the hip line.

Where do I start:

The first order of business is to select your closest size and begin the process of fitting this skirt to your own measurements.  The range of sizes on offer relates to my size charts.  Cut your closest size in a similar fabric for first fittings and make any necessary adjustments for personal fit. Once you have achieved a good personal fit you will be ready to cut in your final fabric.  I always recommend making a sample or toile garment in calico before cutting your precious and final fabric.  The bust measurement on the pattern has a great deal of ease compared to the size chart.  If you'd prefer a tighter fit in your Hip Twist top, then using a pattern that is one or two sizes up from your body measurements should give you a closer fit.

Take a little time to select the knit fabric you use for cutting your first sample.  I strongly recommend that you use a two-way stretch (four-way stretch US) knit fabric to get the best fit out of this pattern.  If you're planning on using a one-way stretch (two-way stretch US) knit then I'd like to suggest you go up one size to achieve a comfortable fit. If you're planning on cutting my favourite style of tee and intend to combine a print with a plain, then do your best to make sure both fabrics have the same behaviour so they work well together.  And one of my favourite outfit combinations with this tee-shirt is my Drape Tube Skirt or the Pencil Skirt.

Skirt features:

This drape skirt is best cut in a double knit PONTI with an elastane content (lycra, spandex) for good recovery.  The seam allowances are 1cm (⅜") on the centre front and back seams with 0.7cm (¼") on the waistline for the self bind and elastic.

It's home and industry ready and based on my size chart.  The pattern fitting is for body hugging garment with a negative ease of 5-10% depending on your fabric choice.  When you check the measurements on the size you have selected you're looking for your body measurements minus 4-10cm approx.

This Pencil Skirt has been a constant item in my wardrobe, for over 35 years.  Use quality fabric and this garment could be with you for the longest time.  The epitome of sustainable fashion.  The sewing pattern included lining patterns so you can make either a summer or winter pencil skirt.

This skirt design has front and back waist darts, a strap waistband, zip guard, tapered side seams and a walking vent.  Also included are the lining patterns, so you can make both summer and winter skirts.

The print document includes the sewing pattern in all nine sizes (with lining patterns), a Size Chart, Fabric Usage Chart, Pattern Measurement Chart, Lay-plans and Making Instructions.  You'll find sewing instructions in a post in the 'well-suited' blog.

Skirt Features:

This Pencil Skirt design is intended for woven fabric and the hip measurement in the sewing pattern has extra for garment ease. This skirt has front and back waist darts, a strap waistband, zip guard, tapered side seams and a walking vent.  Also included are the lining patterns, so you can make both summer and winter skirts.

These particular amounts of garment ease were selected to push a particular look into the skirt design. I've pinched the waist in by 1 cm (3/8") and added 1 cm (3/8") to the hip measurement. The waist measurement has 3cm garment ease.  The hip measurement has 5-6cm garment ease.  Lining patterns are always larger than the garment they fit into.

Where do I start:

Using your hip measurement, select the size closest to your body measurement, from the size chart provided.  This skirt design is intended for woven fabric and the hip measurement has extra for garment ease.  If you prefer a tighter fit, or are using fabric with stretch, you will need to take that into account when choosing the best size for making your pencil skirt.

I always like to recommend that you test this pattern on inexpensive fabric before cutting into your final cloth. And it's a good idea to make an inlined skirt before trying out a fully lined skirt.  Cut your closest size, using a fabric similar to your final fabric, for your first fitting and make any necessary adjustments for personal fit. Once you have achieved a good personal fit you'll be ready to cut in your final fabric with lining.
