Advanced Workshops

IPD- Introduction to Patternmaking for Designers
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

Studio

Introduction to Patternmaking for Designers is a two day workshop aimed to brief the designer on the technical basics of pattern making as they affect the finished fashion garment.

The first day of the workshop covers grain, seams and garment finishes in application, terminology and fabrication. Visual examples of fitting faults will be examined and discussed to identify cause and solution. Technical sketches of these fit solutions are provided in the workbook for future use.

Overall the participant will leave the Introduction to Pattern Making workshop with a set of accurate tools for assessing and perfecting fit in first sample garments.

MG - Manual Grading
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

Manual grading is an important skill to obtain entry-level jobs in the fashion industry.

The manual grading workshop will provide a basic understanding of conventional grade rules and the foundation of computer grading and the construction of offshore size specifications.

On the first day participants will manually grade basic garment shapes to develop a strong understanding of the proportional growth between sizes for men's and women's clothing.

During the second day participants will transfer these basic grade rules to more complex fashion patterns.

Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises you will learn how to manually grade existing patterns ready for production.

GS - Garment Specifications
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

The introductory phase of the Garment Specifications workshop will define the different qualities and functions of make and garment specifications. Attention is paid to the detail required to communicate construction and quality information with offshore manufacturers.

The second day will focus on the communication of design, garment detail and sizing to the offshore producer via a fully detailed garment specification. Grading formulas and subjective grade rules will be discussed in detail.

Some time will be spent on the skills necessary to achieve effective production sketches.

GT - Great Trousers
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

The first day of the Great Trousers workshop will cover the basics of the trouser block and the vital elements of a well fitted, balanced trouser. Students will be encouraged to alter the fit of the basic block for industry or personal use according to the trend demands each season.

The second day will focus on waistband, fly and pocket detailing for tailored and casual trousers. Industry standards and manufacturing norms form the basis of the training offered at Studio Faro.

Advanced Workshops

The following workshops are for industry personnel and students with some experience in pattern making:

DD - Darts to Drape in Flat Pattern Making
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

Utilising the basic industry blocks the Darts to Drap in Flat Pattern Making workshop will introduce participant to manipulation techniques producing sophisticated styles for evening and daywear.

Emphasis is placed on achieving good fit utilising both straight and bias grain styles. The second day of the Darts to Drap in Flat Pattern Making workshop will be to develop complex and intricate draping effects from flat patterns.

In particular the fitted bodice and corset block will be manipulated to produce clever and sophisticated styles suitable for high-end fashion product.

JP - Jeans Patterns
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

The two day Jeans Patterns workshop will reveal the processes involved in making an accurate and will fitted stretch denim jean.

Initially the participant will gain a clear understanding of the trouser block and how to achieve good fit and balance. The basic block is then converted to a stretch jeans block taking into account the percentage stretch to achieve good fit. Seam types, machinery and accurate allowances will be covered.

During the second day the participants will adjust their own jeans style to allow for the weft and warp shrinkage expected from these fabrics during the industrial laundry process. Particular attention will be paid to the proportional shrinkage of garment detail.

IBD - Industry Block Development
3 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

Working from industry tried and tested size 10 basic blocks, the Industry Block Development workshop will allow participants to develop a set of up-to-date blocks for their own use as industry professionals or educators in design and technical studies.

In the Industry Block Development workshop the reference to block development focuses on fit and balance and does not include individual design detail.

The range of block developments include an 'A' line skirt, paneled skirt, fitted trouser, jeans block, shirt and dress block.

TJP - Tailored Jacket Patterns
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

Day One of the Tailored Jacket Patterns workshop covers the conversion of the previously developed fitted block to a well-balanced jacket shape, including a two-piece sleeve.

Tailored Jacket Patterns workshop participants are advised to produce and test the toile for this block between the two training sessions.

Day Two of the workshop will cover the drafting of a traditional rever collar and lapel for a tailored jacket, and the production of lining and fusing patterns appropriate to industry standards in production tailoring.

CT - Creative Tailoring
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

The advanced Creative Tailoring workshop introduces participants to a variety of techniques to achieve more interesting jacket styles.

It is recommended that participants already have a strong understanding of basic tailored jacket patterns. There will be demonstrations of dart manipulation to multiple panels, use of the kimono block and unusual collars. In addition a variety of one and two piece articulated sleeve styles are covered.

ABS - AB Sitam - A Bespoke Pattern Making System
3 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

Learn all about the AB Sitam Block Development' system enabling you to create new basic blocks for the industry or made to measure clients in minutes. Based on the proportional drafting system, this workshop teaches you how the production of basic blocks is both accurate and reliable. Includes pattern template, manual, and specialist equipment in A B Sitam Kit.

Producing Patterns from Existing Garments (2 days) *PA
3 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

Building on previous experience in pattern making, participants will learn the techniques required to develop patterns from a shirt/blouse, skirt and trousers without unpicking or tracing.

Initially basic garments will be provided for participants to learn the basic principles involved. During the course of the first day, participants will be advised with regard to types of personal garments to bring for the second day of the program.

Advanced Grading *PA

The Advanced Grading workshop will focus on complex grading for fashion that considers multi-directional pieces. In particular draped styles, kimono jackets styles and any challenge the participants wish to bring to the workshop.

Baby/Children's Wear Grading. *PA
2 day workshop - Marrickville Studio

The Baby/Children's Wear Grading workshop is for those participants who have previous experience in adult pattern grading and would like to gain knowledge of children's wear pattern grading.

Baby/children's wear grading is more complex than adult pattern grading as the grading increments need to be adjusted at various age and growth stages. Participants will learn how to establish the principles for pattern grading covering both block and style patterns.
