Japan Skirt – Sizes 6-22 (download)

The Japan Skirt has it’s origins in Japanese folk costume. It’s based on a simple rectangle of fabric, wrapped around the waist. In this case I’ve finessed the fit on the waist by including a dart shape in the zip/drape seam. Even with this dart you’ll find the waist of the skirt is positioned in the low waist area, and is not a tight fit. It will sit much like a sarong tied around the waist. This pattern can be cut in both woven and knit fabrics. It should only be cut in fabrics that are good both sides.
Your download will include 2 PDF documents:
- The PDF of the pattern in the print size you have selected (A0, 36″ Plotter or A4/letter).
- A PDF photo tutorial of sewing instructions (16 page PDF) including fabric usage chart, lay-plans, pattern measurements and size chart.
My PDF block and pattern downloads can be printed as A0 or 36” plotter print at your local print shop or as A4/letter at home. Please be sure when you go to the print shop or print at home that you select for printing at ‘actual size’ with ‘no scaling’, or at 100%. This will make sure your pattern is printed at the correct size.
It is available for personal and home use as well as business and educational. Use the drop down menu to make your selection.

In this case I’ve finessed the fit on the waist by including a dart shape in the zip/drape seam. Even with this dart you’ll find the waist of the skirt is positioned in the low waist area, and is not a tight fit. It will sit much like a sarong tied around the waist.
It can be cut in a variety of fabrics, both woven and knit. The size pattern you choose should be 2-4cm (3/4-1 5/8″) larger than your hip measurement. If using stretch fabric, the skirt pattern size you use should be the same as your hip measurement or smaller, depending on how much stretch you have in your fabric.

Skirt features:
This Japanese style folk inspired skirt has a low waist fit with a single zip/dart seam, that also forms the drape at the front of the skirt. The drape can be placed at the centre front of the body or just off-centre.
It’s home and industry ready and based on my size chart. The pattern fitting is for comfortable fit with the usual garment ease (+4cm). There is the option of cutting the skirt with a level or asymmetric hem. Notes are included on the pattern for these two different cuts.
The comfortable fit on the waist can be altered by the addition of darts or elastic at the back waist.
Where do I start:
The first order of business is to select your closest size and begin the process of fitting this skirt to your own measurements. The range of sizes on offer relates to my size chart. Cut your closest size in a similar fabric for first fittings and make any necessary adjustments for personal fit. Once you have achieved a good personal fit you will be ready to cut in your final fabric.
