Skirt Features:

This Pencil Skirt design is intended for woven fabric and the hip measurement in the sewing pattern has extra for garment ease. This skirt has front and back waist darts, a strap waistband, zip guard, tapered side seams and a walking vent.  Also included are the lining patterns, so you can make both summer and winter skirts.

These particular amounts of garment ease were selected to push a particular look into the skirt design. I’ve pinched the waist in by 1 cm (3/8″) and added 1 cm (3/8″) to the hip measurement. The waist measurement has 3cm garment ease.  The hip measurement has 5-6cm garment ease.  Lining patterns are always larger than the garment they fit into.

Where do I start:

Using your hip measurement, select the size closest to your body measurement, from the size chart provided.  This skirt design is intended for woven fabric and the hip measurement has extra for garment ease.  If you prefer a tighter fit, or are using fabric with stretch, you will need to take that into account when choosing the best size for making your pencil skirt.

I always like to recommend that you test this pattern on inexpensive fabric before cutting into your final cloth. And it’s a good idea to make an inlined skirt before trying out a fully lined skirt.  Cut your closest size, using a fabric similar to your final fabric, for your first fitting and make any necessary adjustments for personal fit. Once you have achieved a good personal fit you’ll be ready to cut in your final fabric with lining.  You’ll find more detail about sewing this skirt pattern on the blog.
