12 Jul Corporate Shirt – New Sewing Pattern Release & Bonus
Comfort and Creativity in a Classic Sewing Pattern
Originally developed as a comfortable fit in a corporate environment, my Corporate Shirt sewing pattern can be creative for all occasions. It boasts classic shirt styling that includes details that can be highlighted using contrast fabrics. It is a part of my Off-the-Rails Sewing Patterns collection that focuses on more classic designs that may last forever in your wardrobe.
It has a two piece collar and back yoke that is a double layer to give a stronger line across the shoulder. The front button opening has a double turn of cloth that provides a self-interlining for the buttons and button holes. I have always preferred the softer line achieved from using self fabric as interlining.
The sleeve is a straight cut with two tucks into the cuff, a gauntlet placket and bind, and a folded cuff with two buttons. The hem has shirt tail curves with a fine double turn hem.
Let’s talk about fit…
This shirt pattern is based on my fitted dress block available on the website. In making this pattern I decided to initially equalise the fitted dress block to bring the side seam around to the middle of the front and back pieces. This is always preferred for production as it makes the final stage of checking quality control measurements a lot easier.
The fit of this shirt is gentle with a soft curve side seam, back waist darts and a front bust dart. I have left the front waist dart out of this design to ensure comfort while sitting and ease of movement while working. This shirt sewing pattern gives you the option of cutting it in one fabric only or cutting it with a contrast colour or print block that reveals your more creative side.
As a bonus exclusive to this sewing pattern you will receive and A4/letter format PDF download of detailed pattern making instructions for conducting a Full Bust Adjustment (FBA) on the Corporate Shirt Pattern (19 pages).
Let’s talk about fabric…
For a long time now I have been in love with the quality and amazing print options offered by patchwork fabrics. They are based on heirloom cotton weaves that are of high quality and intended to last for a very long time. This so appeals to my notion of favourite clothing lasting the distance and not wearing out quickly. If you’re going to take the time to make your own clothes you may consider honouring the effort and creativity by using quality fabrics and trims.
On the down side they are narrow usually coming in at 112-115cm, so they require more metres than other wider fabrics. And the better quality patchwork fabrics can be a bit more expensive. Sometime ago I decided that I’d rather have fewer clothing items made from better cloth and that way I justify paying a little more for my fabric.
And finally, I’ve discovered that if when you wash your patchwork fabric clothing items you give them a good shake and hang on a coat hanger you rarely have to iron them. That’s a big plus for me!
